3 Simple Secrets to Totally Rocking Your Metal Roof InstallDemand for metal roofing is forecasted to increase through 2015. According to the Metal Roofing Alliance, steel roof installations have more than doubled in the last five years and will continue to grow 15% per year. It’s becoming a more popular roofing choice for new residential roofs, as well as in replacement roofs on homes due to its affordability, durability, appearance and lifespan. Here’s some simple advice for a better metal roof install.

(1) Red or Blue? Be careful of the color chalk line you choose. If you pop lines for your fasteners, do not use red chalk. You may or may not be aware but certain chalks wash away while other colors stay forever. And forever is a long time to look at a red line. Roofers want chalk lines that won’t wash away before they finish; however, avoid red especially on metal. We’ve seen images where a red line was snapped on a new prefinished metal barn panel, and ten years later guess what? Yep, the chalk line is still highly visible!

(2) Protect Your Digiti. Now you know the Latin name for fingers. Obviously gloves are a necessity but rubber coated gloves are imperative. You know how scorching hot metal can get in the sun, but did you know that you could actually sustain burns to your skin requiring medical attention? The rubber coated gloves are also helpful in protecting your hands from those sharp metal edges and give you a better grip on your materials. Another key reason to wear gloves is that sweat and body oils can tarnish or stain some metals.

(3) Strip Down. It is true and common for a metal roof to be installed right over a shingle roof. But this can cause major issues down the road for the homeowner. The biggest issue is the potential for rust because condensation can occur between the metal and the old shingles. In fact, most metal roofing manufacturers will void the warranty if it’s applied over shingles. So, take the time to do it right. Remove the old roof and follow the manufacturers guidelines and use the proper components along the way so it will last as long as it was designed to and look its best. And speaking of rust, here’s a bonus tip. Be sure to brush off any of the metal shavings or tiny pieces when you’re finished. Those little specks are enough to cause rust spots.

The best way to reduce your roofing company's costs without decreasing value is to use high quality materials that will reduce the need for "do-overs," making your employees (and therefore the installation process) as efficient as possible. The SCRAIL® RoofLoc® System, created by the BECK Fastener Group® can help you achieve both of these goals.

Made of standard steel or stainless steel, a patented thread design (SteelThread) for better hold in the metal, and coated with BECK's FasCoat® protectant, the SCRAIL® RoofLoc® System was created specifically for applications where metal must be joined to wood. They're available in collated strips complete with a waterproof washer, which makes installing them with the FASCO-branded F58 Metal Roofing Installation Tool speed along up to eight times faster than bulk screws (and two times faster than regular collated screws).
