5 Reasons to be Thankful for Quiet Floors

Silence is music to the ears when it comes to having quiet floors free from squeaks and creaks. Noisy floors can pop up anywhere in a home. These are usually a result of loose subflooring and nails that have popped out of place as we’ve discussed previously. And just because bathrooms may be smaller, doesn’t mean they get a free pass, they too can have those annoying creaks.

Not only can squeaky bathroom floors become a nuisance, but so too can squeaky shower floors. If your bathroom floor, including shower floor, are quiet then you are lucky and should be that thankful that your contractor was knowledgeable and worked diligently to ensure that:

1)      Your subfloors were installed properly: Similar to other areas of your house, if your subfloor is loose or flexing on a nail or screw as people walk across you’ll get unwanted noises. 2)      Your wood floors were waterproofed: If you choose wood floors for the bathroom, be sure to waterproof the area outside of your shower. The wood will expand as it swells when the wood floors get wet. Eventually that expansion may cause movement under your shower pan leading to squeaks.

3)      Humidity has been considered: Humidity levels in bathrooms are inconsistent. If your tile floors remain quiet, it’s most likely because of proper subfloor installation, as well as the use of a thinset that offers some flexibility for heat expansion. Especially for darker times that absorb more heat than lighter colored tile.

4)      There’s a silicone filled gap: You want to have a thin gap filled with silicone between the floor tile and the shower pan. If the tile floor butts up directly against the shower pan, it can squeak when body weight steps into the shower.

5)      Shower pans are clipped in: The reason for most shower pan squeaks is because the shower pan was screwed directly in the studs. The best option is to use no-drill clip attachments for the shower pan.
