Top Trends in Bathroom Flooring

The newest looks in bathrooms are a modern take on vintage looks. Gone are the square white tile floors of the last 50 years. And, while the white subway tile remains popular, there are some new players, or new version of old players, coming on the scene. Here is a recap of what’s hot in bathroom flooring for 2018.

Porcelain planks. Smooth and easy to clean like tile, but created in the look of wood planks, this style is the most in-demand bathroom flooring you’ll see. These durable tiles give the style of wood but resist warping and water damage that can occur in the bathroom.

Terrazzo flooring. Terrazzo is a material popularized in the 1920’s art deco architecture. This floor covering takes a visual inspiration from marble, but has the durability of cement. It is a manufactured product of stone chips, traditionally marble, embedded in concrete or encased in resin. It gives a mixed look somewhere between industrial and classic.

Matte finish tiles. While high gloss tiles will always have a place in bathroom décor, matte tiles have really started to gain popularity. They show less smudges, which is ideal for flooring. When installing, you need to consider both your natural and artificial lighting, as the matte tile will not reflect light as a traditional glossy tile would.

Non-traditional tile sizes. Over the last several years, as the porcelain planks have gained popularity, oversize tiles have been appearing in the market, with lengths varying from 12”- 48” on a standard 6” width. These extra-long tiles are creating the opportunity for unique patterning, like herringbone.

Textured tiles. While tiles have been changing their looks to resemble other materials, like distressed wood, there have been changes in textures as well. Raked is a popular option that looks just like it sounds.

Penny rounds in soft colors.  White penny rounds were a staple in the 1920’s. What’s old is new again, but with a modification in the color. Light pastels and neutrals are giving these vintage classics a modern feel.
