How Tall Is Too Tall? A Guide to Choosing Fence Height

White Picket Fence

Deciding how tall to build your fence is an important consideration and calculation when planning a fence project.  How tall it is will determine how much material to buy and will also be a crucial factor impacting sight lines and the overall look of the project. Knowing its purpose and function is the first part of making the decision. Is this a white picket fence for the front yard that will complement the home’s size? Or is it more of a backyard functional fence designed to contain a pet or to create privacy?

Front Yards

Understanding the purpose of the fence is the first factor when deciding on the structure’s height.  If the fence is intended to enhance curb appeal and be part of the landscaping, you don’t want to have a fence that is too tall and becomes the dominant feature in the yard. Or worse, blocks the view of the house. These accent fences can be as small as one to two feet tall. They can be used as delineation between side yards and driveways, or to keep pedestrians off the grass and provide security. Homeowners may opt for a fence that is three to four feet tall, depending on their needs.

Color and material will also play a role in planning. There are many different types of fencing that can be used, from the traditional white picket fence, a split rail fence, or even ornate wrought iron. It’s important to keep in mind the overall finished look, and to choose the right materials for your climate and the fence’s purpose. There’s nothing worse than having to re-dig post holes and repair a fence or change materials because it’s not performing well for the intended application.

Back Yards

Back yard fences serve a different purpose compared to their typically more ornate front yard counterparts. Backyards are where many families spend their time relaxing, enjoying the weather and each other’s company. Often the decision to build a back-yard fence comes from a specific need or necessity. A strong fence can ensure peace of mind when children are out playing, or when pets are let out at night. Homeowners who live in neighborhoods where the homes are in close proximity to each other may prefer to have their yard fenced for privacy. A typical privacy fence can range from five to six feet in height and have a variety of design elements.

Choosing the Correct Materials

Fences are meant to last many years, so they need to be well planned and built with durable materials and fasteners that are high quality products, made to last. Look for materials that are weather and climate appropriate, and fasteners that are appropriate for the job. The BECK Fence Stapling System includes air-driven fence staples that will provide superior holding power and corrosion protection for wire to wood applications. For wood or vinyl fencing, consider using SCRAIL® FASTENERS made by BECK, which help you complete the job twice as fast vs. collated screws and eight times faster than bulk screws. They can also be removed and adjusted, making the build a bit easier when adjustments are required.
